WHAT'S IN YOUR BAG?

This page design has a more modern aesthetic as it utilizes a lot of different shapes and lines to bring the viewer's attention. I chose a blue and orange color scheme as I tried to make them opposites, but still complementary. Along with this, there are cut-out images to showcase each item that our sources talked about.

BREAKFAST BUNCH

Attempting to create a theme of morning ambiance, the page uses the color of mustard yellow which is often associated with breakfast foods. Along with this, the large food cutouts bring visual interests to the page. Finally, the font brings a very homey vibe, that brings the page together.

AI IS HERE. GET USED TO IT.

This page design was a stressful one. I sat in the newsroom the last night of production re-sketching this page over and over. Each time I ran into the same problem: the page was boring. I had a blue graphic and a blue background. There was too much blue. But as I started playing around with colors I realized the beige background made the blue graphics look more teal and made the page more visually appealing. Following the color change, I began adding circle around the page in order to bring more of the teal into the page. Finally I decided that I didn't want the traditional page set-up and instead wanted a circular cut out. This is one of my favorite pages.

WHICH HOLIDAY DRINK ARE YOU?

This page design is the culmination of creativity and chaos. When designing this page, my co-author and I mapped out the questions we wanted in our quiz, as well as a visual representation that would correctly convey the holiday theme of the alt-copy. We decided to go with traditional colors such as red and green, as well as trees, snowmen and a candy cane pattern to create a holiday landscape.

WATCH YOUR WORDS

Usually when finding ideas for page design, I scroll on Pinterest. However, trying to find ideas for this page felt like looking for a needle in a haystack. None of the ideas felt like they fit the topic of this article — how language is changing and as a result, words are becoming unspeakable. So, I began thinking, and eventually, I came up with the main visual. I imagined a mouth being zipped, which represents words becoming unacceptable to say, and imagined big bold words to draw the reader in. After I came up with a color palette, thus creating the the page design.
