This year, as part of the Editor-in-Chief team, we dealt with a lot more takedown and name removal requests than usual. We decided to be more flexible with these cases, especially when we felt that someone wasn’t being represented fairly or fully in a story. Instead of sticking strictly to rules, we looked at each situation individually and tried to do what felt right. Our mission statement talks about being empathetic to our sources, and I really believe that honoring some of these requests shows that empathy in action.
